    • News Item: 18 Jan 1878, Government Dam, Napperby, South Australia, Australia; PROVINCIAL TELEGRAMS. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT NAPPERBY. Crystal Brook, January 17. On Tuesday, between midnight and 1 a.m., a fire broke out in Messrs. Keightley Bros. store at Government Dam and was communicated to the dwelling-houses on both sides. All three being constructed of weatherboards were burnt to the ground. On Wednesday night, at about the same time, the burning embers flared up and set fire to a woodpile and thence reached the Government Dam Hotel, which in a short time was utterly destroyed. A few articles of furniture were the only things saved. A hot wind was blowing all night, and caused the flames to spread with fearful rapidity. None of the buildings were insured.     Mr. Herbert Keightley, who died on Wednesday, aged 84, was the oldest commercial traveller in active service in the State. He had been for the last 40 years engaged in traveiling for wine businesses.
    For many years he travelled for the Katanning vineyards, and latterly represented 'Auldana.' He despised motor cars and did most of his rounds on foot.

    The Late Mr. Herbert Keightley.
    The funeral of the late Mr. Herbert Keightley, who died at his late residence, 143 Angelo street, South Perth, on June 5, took place in the Brethren portion of the Karrakatta Cemetery, on June 7. and was well attended.
    Deceased was born in Nottingham, England, and had resided in Australia for about 81 years. He spent 57 years of his life in South Australia, and about 24 years in this State. His was a loving disposition, and he made many friends in South Perth and among the many worshippers of his church. The cortege moved from his late residence, Wahroonga, and proceeded to the Cemetery, where his remains were laid to rest at the conclusion of an impressive service conducted by Bro. R.F. Cross.
